|A Bonus for Being Thinner |
According to an article on September 4, 2003 by Fox’s Lisa Porteus, many large companies are offering small cash bonuses and even paid days off to people who lose weight.
The main reason? The bottom line. Obesity costs American businesses is roughly $12.7 billion – yes, that’s Billion – per year. Obesity is said to be associated with 39 million lost workdays annually, as well as 63 million doctor visits.
One woman who dropped 93 pounds through an office-sponsored program said she probably wouldn’t have been able to do it if she wasn’t able to participate at work. Another person, who’s company encourages people to form weight loss teams, says the resulting encouragement really helps people stay with the program.
But – we can’t start something without gathering critics: Some people who are already thin are complaining that because they can’t compete for the paid days off, they’re being discriminated against.
My thoughts? This isn’t a race issue or a gender issue – this is a health issue. Let’s just help other people get healthy without climbing on the selfishness bandwagon.else up?
