Answers For The Workplace E-Memo

What Employees Want Most

According to a recent survey, the most desired benefit sought by employees is flexible work hours.

The survey, with responses from over 4,000 people, found that almost half of people already employed believe having flexible hours is the most important factor in selecting their next job. For those currently looking for work, 68% are seeking flex hours.

The need for work/life balance is important. While some in the media and in politics view the term “family values” as a code word for exclusion (an opinion that never ceases to make me scratch my head), offering flexible hours may be the best way a company can be family friendly. Why? Because the survey also found that more than 77% of the respondents with children under the age of six agree that work/life balance is an important factor when deciding whether or not to apply for a new job.

To many, having flex time is even more important than money. Fully 1/3 of the respondents said they’d rather have flex hours than a $1,500 raise.
