|The High Cost of Spam, Part II |
Previously I shared that junk Email – spam – costs the average company $874 per employee per year.
Looking at it another way, dealing with spam kills 100% of the productivity of one in every 72 employees. Ian Campbell, CEO of Nucleus Research, says, "If one of out of every 72 of your employees showed up to work and slept all day, you'd be upset about that, but you're losing that productivity simply because you have spam coming through."
Since spam filters block only about 25% of spam, tough new laws are the best approach. But all five bills currently before congress legalize spam.
Robert Jones, writing in the Ecommerce Times, says we should follow the European Union on this one. He says “the EU’s Privacy and Electronic Communications Directive, which comes into force on 31 October, will make it illegal to send unsolicited email to an individual.”
According to Jones, some 200 operations send 90% of all spam, and around 100 have set up operations in China, where labor to send spam is cheap. These companies can’t wait for the US Congress to legalize spam.
I highly recommend contacting your congressman and asking that spam be made illegal.
