Answers For The Workplace E-Memo

The All-Important Thank You Note

Whatís one easy way to set yourself apart from the competition? Itís a strange little piece of paper called a thank you note.

For those looking for work, a thank you note if vital after the interview if you want to set yourselves apart from the competition. Send notes to every key person with whom you spoke. Two quick stories here:

First, I know of a man who interviewed ten people over the course of a week to fill a position. Only one sent a thank you note. When the young lady who got the job asked what set her apart from the competition, my acquaintance told her straight out: You were all pretty equal, but you were the only one who sent a thank you note.

In another example, a corporate vice president I know had a difficult time deciding among the finalists for his administrative assistant opening. He used the quality of the thank you notes to help figure out who to hire.

Using thank you notes is also a powerful tool for sales reps and other business meetings with clients.

It seems like such a simple thing, but a simple thank you note and some first class postage sends a message that you, too, are first class.
