Answers For The Workplace E-Memo

Looking for the Hiring Boom

The experts have been predicting it: We’re about to enter into a hiring boom and experience economic rebirth. It’s the story in many business magazines, including the cover story in the September, 2003 edition of Business 2.0. Technology is supposed to drive it, and some experts are saying that we’re about to face a labor short fall that will make the hiring crazes of the 1990’s look small.

All the statistics they lay out on the table make sense. But I, as well as some of my personal sources, am still cautious. Not negative or fearful – just cautious. The reason? All I have to say is 9-11. Terrorism is a non-linear reality. In other words, we cannot predict it. With so much riding on “consumer confidence,” it could be a huge blow to us if our country experiences another terrorist act on the level of what happened two years ago.

Don’t get me wrong – I pray we have a hiring craze and people get back to higher levels of confidence. So onward and upward with boldness. But keep in mind that we have many new factors to consider that weren’t issues in the 1990’s, and now we need strategies for dealing with non-linearities.
